Beating the Heat
May has officially made its debut, and we’re told there’s no turning back. When the sun’s out in full force, it’s the beginning of thirst-quenching season. Even before the extreme heat, the rays tend to get us in the mood for a nice, cool beverage. On ice, of course!
Not Your Mother’s Iced Tea
Iced tea feels like a true classic, but the versions that we’re accustomed to might feel a bit boring and stale by now (Think southern peach sweet tea or a classic black-tea brew with a slice of fresh lemon—not that there’s anything wrong with those.). Instead, we’re interested in a new take with exciting flavors and combinations. Of course, this certainly isn’t our first rodeo with iced tea. We’ve highlighted different versions worldwide, broken down the history, and even offered a step-by-step breakdown.
But First, a Guide
First off, it’s important to nail down the basics—in this case, a proper cold brew method for loose-leaf tea. You can see here for our full guide, but here’s a quick summary based on the Dani Spies method:
- Pour your favorite loose leaf tea into a container or pitcher. Use 1 teaspoon for every 6 to 8 ounces of water. If you are using a pitcher with a built-in strainer, pour the tea into the strainer for easy removal later on.
- Pour room-temperature water over the tea leaves. (The amount will depend on the size of your jug, as noted in step one.)
- Secure the lid and refrigerate so the tea infuses overnight, for about 8 to 12 hours. (Adjust to your preference.)
- Strain the leaves out and enjoy your cold brew! Add your sweetener or mix-ins of choice, like honey, berries, lemon, cinnamon, or mint, and serve over ice.
Choose Your Favorite
Between minty, fruity, floral, and citrusy, there’s room for all kinds of flavors and types of iced tea, including both caffeinated and naturally caffeine-free teas—so your cravings can be fulfilled at all times of day (and night). And remember, they’re all organic!
-
First off, we have Minty Morning, a black tea-based blend that’s super-invigorating and cooling. Featuring both spearmint and peppermint, plus a hint of lemongrass, if there’s one thing this one isn’t missing, it’s balance.
-
If going the citrusy route, Lemon Ginger is just the summery kick we’re all looking for. This zesty herbal blend is inherently caffeine-free, so you don’t have to worry once those late-afternoon pangs kick in.
-
Prefer straight-up fruity iced tea with some satisfying sweetness without any added sweetener? We love Passion Green, providing all the benefits and balance of green tea with the tarty sweetness of passionfruit, mango, and strawberry flavors—plus more.
-
The aromatic Chamomile Lavender provides the floral freshness you didn’t know you needed combined with the nighttime-friendly chamomile. After an active and sweaty day outside, perhaps some calmness is just what the doctor will have ordered.
Keep It Fresh
A different approach to any drink is what keeps it exciting and refreshing. Given we’re going to be enjoying these elixirs all summer long, a little variation goes a long way.
